Bulldogs 6-0 in finals
at Central Tournament
By Clinton Vining
Publisher, The Sun
The Bulldogs won six finals
matches and lost just one plac-
ing match---a forfeit to a team
member--at the Central High
School wrestling tournament
last Wednesday.
Jordan Combs (106), Coty
Brown (113), Skyler Voigt
(120), Brandon Miller (138),
Travis Hunt (152) and TJ
Greenhill (160) all won tour-
nament titles.
"We started slow today;
even struggled with our bigger
guys in consolation ..." said
WHS Coach Ariah Fasana,
"but the rest of the guys looked
great through the final few
rounds, going 9-1 in final plac-
ing matches."
Brandon Englund gave
teammate Travis Knrz a forfeit
in the 145-pound third-place
match, which proved to be the
team's only placing loss.
Schuylar Carpenter (126),
Travis Kurz (145) and Tommy
Cobb (285)placed third.
Englund (145) finished fourth.
"Skyler Voigt and Brandon
Miller continue to win with
falls most of the time, and Coty
Brown has been really looking
strongthis season," Fasana
said.
As a team, the Bulldogs fin-
ished second behind Tillamook
who had 12 placers, but just
two champions and five run-
ners-up.
Due to technical difficulties,
team scores were not readily
available after the tournament,
but Fasana did know that
Stayton fmished third and Cot-
tage Grove fourth. Elmira,
Nestucca, Neah Kah Nie and
Central also wrestled in the
eight-team tournament.
The Bulldogs will travel to
Pendleton for the Freeberry In-
vitational on Thursday this
week.
"Thanks to our fans, who
were encouraging and well
heard today," said Fasana after
the Central Tournament.

Seven Valiants also scored,
led by 5-5 sophomore guard
Lindsie LaBonte, who had 10.
Brook Wilson and Kaydi

WHS still looking
for their first win
By Clinton Vining
Publisher, The Sun
Willamina's boys fell to 0-7
last week, in a "brutal" loss to
sixth-ranked Valley Catholic
91-52.
"It was a bit humbling," said
WHS Coach Jereme Park.
The Bulldogs' Jake
Plemmons hit five
times from down-
town to lead his team
with 19 points and
Brady Bruckner had
17 with three treys.
"I think the guys
played a pretty good
game. Valley Catho-
lic just played on a
different level," Park
said.
The Valiants shot
almost perfectly in
the first half and
scored a crushing 57 points.
They were led by Christian
McDonald, who put up 27
points. Three others scored in
double digits.
Willamina scored evenly
across the four quarters, with 13
apiece in the first two and then
12 and 14 in the third and
fourth.
Looking forward, the Bull-
dogs will face 3A Harrisburg,
of the PacWest Conference, at
the Central Linn Holiday Tour-
Jake Plemmons
• Hit five 3-pointers,
scoring 19 at VC
nament today. The Eagles are
.5-2 on the season.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs
will play the winner or loser of
the Central Linn-Monroe
game, depending on the out-
come of tonight's game. Includ-
ing the season opening 90-78
win at Willamina, Central Linn
is 4-3. Monroe is 4-4 going into
the tournament. Both
are 2A schools.
The Bulldogs are
struggling to fill a ros-
ter. Already faced
with injury and eligi-
bility issues, this
week several players
are fighting illness,
said the coach. That is
something Park
hopes to have rem-
edied by the first of
the year when the
West Valley League
season tips off.
Until then, there are some
things the Bulldogs need to
work on.
"Our defense isn't quite
where, I'd like it," Park said,
adding that they need to have
better ball control, too.
Against Valley Catholic,
Adam Oakes was two points
shy of scoring a double-double.
He had 12 rebounds and eight
points. Point guard Tyson Jahn
gave his team seven assists.
