DA wants
no bail for
assailant
By Marguerite Alexander
Correspondent, The Sun
The Sheridan man accused of
attempting to kill his wife on Dec.
16 was scheduled to appear in court
yesterday. The deputy district attor-
ney in charge of the ease was pre,
pared to ask the court to hold
Rajeed Carriman on no b/~il.
Carriman, a teacher at the fed-
eral prison in Sheridan, was ar-
rested and booked into Yamhill
County Jail after reportedly assault-
ing his wife in their home, fleeing
the scene and keeping.deputies at
bay for an hour while holding a
knife to his throat and threatening
to kill himself. Carriman's wife,
Summer, is a correctional officer at
the prison.
Prior to his Tuesday afternoon
court appearance Rajeed was be-
ing held on $300,000 bail. He has
been charged with attempted mur-
der, first-degree assault, second-
degree assault, third-degree assault,
unlawful use of a weapon, menac-
ing and strangulation.
Court records give the follow-
ing account of the incident:
Shortly after 4 p.m. on Dee. 16
deputies responded to a domestic
disturbance in the 700 block of
West Main Street. They heard a
female voice screaming inside the
residence, "as if she was in fear."
The door was locked so they
knocked louder. The woman
opened the door as they were pre-
paring to make a forced entry.
Blood covered the left side of
her face. There was also a cut on
the right side of her neck.

400 homes
lose power on
Christmas Day
A fallen tree knocked out power
to 400 homes southwest of Sheri-
dan on Christmas Day. According
to PGE spokesperson Brianne
Hyder, PGE crews responded to
Mountain Springs Drive off of
Gooseneck Road. The power went
out at 1 p.m. and was restored at 4
p.m.
The outage was more than an
inconvenience to some. One fam-
ily on Finn Road was just putting
their Christmas turkey in to roast
when the power went out. They
ended up packing up everything
and heading into town to finish pre-
paring Christmas Dinner at the
home of a family member.

Willamina Lumber stocks
the shelves in a big way

Willamina Lumber Mill set a
record last week when it donated
9,431 pounds of food to the West Val-
ley Community Services food bank.
"It blows me away," said Shaft
Hyatt, the local food bank director, as
17 Willamina Lumber employees
pulled up with two truck loads of non-
perishables.
"It makes me want to cry," Hyatt
continued. "This is going to feed a lot
of people."
In mid-November, Willamina
Lumber's Plant Advisory Committee,
began a food drive and promised the
department with most poundage per
person a pizza lunch.
"There was a lot of spying going
on and a lot of creativity going on
about how to get the most food," said
Plant Manager Bret Griffin.
The mill manager even admitted to
having a mole on the quad mill's team,
but the information he was getting
wasn't all accurate. Teams were hid-
ing food to disguise their progress.
The Quad sawmill team won.
Fifty-four strong from the sawmill,
fliers, millwrights and electricians, the
Quad donated 5,440 pounds of food.
The other four teams in the competi-
tion were the Twin Mill, Truck Shop,
Planer and A-Frame/HR/Twin Main-
tenance/Twin Electrical/Purchasing.
"It's a good feeling," said John
Brown, who helped lead the Quad
team to victory. "Especially with this
magnitude of food."
The winners brought in about 100
pounds of food per person and more
than $1,400. They tried to implement
a payroll deducation, but settled for
an almost mandatory request. Some
donated $100 and a lot gave $50 or
$20, said Brown.
After the money was raised, Sharon
Sabey, a wife of one of the guys, went
shopping for pallets of groceries.
"It was one thing that every em-
ployee at the plant could physically
participate in," Griffin said.
The food bank currently services
approximately 800 people a month in
Sheridan, Willamina and Grand
Ronde. The director said that they
probably won't have to buy food next
month, because of the mill's and other
donations this month that totaled
12,416 pounds of food.
"Next year's food drive started about
15 minutes after we finished the weigh-
in on this one," Griffin said.
