Unemployment is also still
in the doldrums in the West
Valley after a brief uptick last
month and both Yamhill and
Polk counties are higher than
the 8 percent promised when
Congress approved TARP and
other huge stimulus programs
a year or so ago.
In Yamhill County, the raw
jobless rate came in at 9.7 per-
cent in June, said Pat
O'Connor, regional economist
at Oregon's state agency,
WorkSource. Still, that's better
than the shocking 10.9 percent
in 2010.
Yamhill County's unem-
ployment rate again matched
the statewide rate, also 9.7 per-
cent in June this year, and does
compare favorably to the state's
10.7 percent unemployment in
2010.
Polk County's unemploy-
ment rate at 8.7 percent for June
201'1 was significantly lower
than for Yamhill County or Or-
egon, but again, is higher than
F'ire dept. collects
nearly $25,000 for
fire, crash calls
Since the West Valley Fire
Board established a policy to
collect for fire response and
cleaning up after motor ve-
hicle crashes, it has collected
$24,761, said Fire Chief
Chuck Eddings. It could be
collecting even more.
Insurance companies are
required to include crash
cleanup in the premiums it
collects for auto insurance,
Eddings explained. Two
years ago the fire board
adopted a policy allowing it
to bill when it responds to
motor vehicle accidents. At
the July 12 meeting it clari-
fied some terminology in the
district's policy to keep things
from slipping through the bill-
ing process.
The fire board also reap-
pointed the three members of
the Civil Service Commission,
Bob Chapin, Patty Brooks and
Pete Wakeland, to serve another
three-year term. Although the
Civil Service Commission has
not yet set a date to meet,
Eddings said that it will be
scheduling a meeting soon.
Blues, folk singer to
perform at Rock Quarry
Charlie Parr is scheduled
to perform on Thursday at
Kim Hamblin and Dan
Rinke's Rock Quarry at Roots
and Wings Farm, between
Sheridan and Willamin
The event, sponsored by
Wildwood Hotel begins at 6
p.m. with a potluck meal.
Live music will follow the
meal.
On Facebook, Hamblin
advised those who come to
wear practical shoes and
bring a sweatshirt.
"Charlie Parr is a regular
guy. Raised in a blue-collar
family in Austin, Minn., Parr
is the kind of guy you'll find
parked in folding chairs
throughout the garages of
America," wrote City

Parr, considered a folk and
country blues singer, will play
at Pickathon in Portland this
weekend, after his show in the
West Valley.
last month's 8.4 percent. The
2011 rate was also lower than
a year ago in June 2010, when
the rate was 8.8 percent.
These numbers are just the
basic unemployment rate.
Since the size of the working
population fluctuates according
to how many jobs are actually
available and filled, the num-
bers also fluctuate according to
how they are calculated.
To practically no one's sur-
prise, residental real estate con-
finued its slide in June, although
time on the market has shrunk
in the Portland Metropolitan
area. Apparently home owners
and real estate folks are getting
the hang of the "new" market
realities.
Oregon's Regional Multiple
Listing Service statistics now
break out Polk and Marion
counties, as well as Yamhill
County, so a more accurate
look at trends in the West Val-
ley is possible.
In Yarnhill County pending
sales were down 6.4 percent
compared to June 2010, while
the average sale price dropped
almost five percent. There are
934 new listings in the county,
compared to 801 last month, but
it took about 206 days on the
market before properties sold.
Average sale price for the
year to date was $192,300,
down 5.7 percent from last
year. In all of Yamhill County,
just 88 homes sold in June 2011
for an average price of
$229,000. It looks as if high-
end homes are still moving.
Polk County figures now
can be reported without West
Salem, but still including cit-
fes like Monmouth, Indepen-
dence and Dallas, and parts
of Grand Ronde and Wil-
lamina.
That said, Polk County ex-
West Salem, had 110 active list-
ings in June, up just a bit from
the 104 in May 2011, and pend-
ing sales are up to 12 this
month. And sold homes were
on the market almost a year
before they sold.
Average sale price for the
past year has been $157,600,
and that is down 17.4 percent
from last year.
FLAMES SEEN FOR llKS

An explosion during a fire last Thursday near McMinnville Municipal Airport sends a ball of flame high into the
sky that could be seen for miles. According to a press release from McMinnville Fire Department, the blaze fully
engulfed a 60,000-square-foot Evergreen Aviation warehouse that housed airplane parts, some for the Aviation
Museum, and also included 55-gallon fuel drums, believed responsible for the three blasts that hampered
flreflghter suppression activities. The warehouse was one of four 100-by-600-foot structures on Cruickshank
Road.
