At the Movies
00Nater for Elephants'
is a tl00ree-ring mistake
By lan Black
Special to The Sun
Oh, hey, look it's a roman-
tic period piece--the story of a
strapping young lad in the early
part of the 20th century who
falls in love with a woman who
is attached to another man.
They overcome trials and
adversity, and the whole tale is
framed through the eyes of the
young lad once he has become

an old man.
If you guessed that I saw
"The Notebook" this weekend,
you'd be right. Except the
movie was called "Water for
Elephants." There was also
some circus stuff in there, so I
guess I saw "The Notebook"
and "Big Fish."
All joking aside, this is a dif-
ferent movie, but really ... not
that different.
Jacob Jankowski (Robert
Pattinson), is a young veteri-
nary student who happens by
chance to fall in with a second-
rate circus during the early days
of the Great Depression. With
his past experience with ani-
mals, he is put in charge of the
menagerie. He meets Marlena
Rosenblatt (Reese Wither-
spoon) an equestrian performer
and sparks fly immediately. Too
bad he then meets her husband
(Christoph Waltz), but you
know how these things work:
it's forbidden love. All the
while, Hal Holbrook is framing
the story as 90-year old Jacob.
So, while this may not be
"The Notebook" it's still basi-
cally the same movie. It's the
same format, same conflicts,
even basically the same time
period, and I didn't even really
like that movie. At least "Big
Fish" was sort of whimsical.
Why can't one of these films
simply be set in the past? Why
does it need to be a flashback,
or have a flash-forward? Do
they think people "won't con-
nect with it if we don't see a
modem setting at some point?
I realize this film is an adapta-
tion of a novel, but so was "The
Notebook." You're allowed to
do new things with it.
Robert Pattinson's role in
this movie did him no favors.
There was simply no chemis-
try, and when your film is a ro-
mance, especially one with
such a derivative plot, that's
about all you have to bank on.
Pattinson once again has all the
charisma of a stack of firewood
and Academy Award winner
Witherspoon seems squeaky
and silly.
The idea of their romance
might work in the novel, but on
screen, it's distracting and un-
believable. Both Pattinson and
Witherspoon are to blame for
this, but he probably takes the
lion's share (heh) of it for just
seeming so bored the entire
movie. I didn't believe any of
the interactions between them,
and poor Christoph Waltz is
caught in the middle being way
too talented for this sort of role.
It's pretty obvious this film
was a transparent attempt to
cash in on the "Twilight" and
"Notebook" style audiences all
in one, as those two groups of-
ten overlap. Watching this film
it just felt like the minimal
amount of effort was put into
this movie, and then they re-
leased it. It's not terrible. It's a
movie. It's just completely bor-
ing and exactly like the other
films I keep bringing up.
So I can't outright call the
film bad, because it isn't. If
you asked me to say something
positive, I'd tell you that the
art direction is kind of nice.
Nothing Earth-shattering, but
it has its moments where you
might even say it looked pretty.
But I was so busy being bored
that I couldn't really even en-
joy that.
Films like "Water for El-
ephants" are usually the worst
types of movies I have to re-
view. Not because the titles are
stupid (though this title is very
stupid), but because they are
just so maddeningly average. I
can't make fun of it for being
terrible, and I certainly can't
enjoy it for being good. It's just
there, like a bowl of soggy bran
flakes; just taking up space.
This film really isn't worth
the trouble. It's been a long
time since Hollywood has
made a circus movie. Obvi-
Ously, not long enough. As Mr.
Jon Bon Jovi might say, it just
gives love a bad name.

Joseph opens at
Gallery Theater
in Technicolor
Directed by Chris Benham, Joseph and,the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, opens at McMinnville s Gallery The-
ater on May 6.
The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors
comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. The
lyrics were written by Time Rice and the music composed by
Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with pro-
phetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous
brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adven-
tures in which his spirit and humanity are continually chal-
lenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances
from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail.
When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the
Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well
on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his
brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly fmd themselves
groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer
recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself
leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel.
The show will run May 6 through May 28 on the main
stage with Friday and Saturday plays beginning at 7:30 p.m.,
and Sunday performances at 3 p.m.
