No
charges
against
coach
By Clinton Vining
Publisher, The Sun
After investigating alle-
gations that former Wil-
lamina High School boys'
basketball coach Josh
Manley was sending inap-
propriate text messages, the
Yamhill County Sheriff's
Office found no reason to
file charges.
The Sheriff's Office
"found no criminal acts,"
said public information of-
fleer Captain Ken Summers,
of the sheriff's office.
Summers noted on Mon-
day that the issue had been
referred back to the county's
juvenile department, where
Manley works.
He was fired from his job
as the head basketball coach
at Willamina High School
on Feb. 25, though the
school district never re-
leased a specific reason.
"It was a disciplinary is-
sue," said Willamina Super-
intendent Mark Jeffery last
week.
Manley coached the
WHS boys for two years.
His teams finished 8-17 this
year and 7-15 last year.
He has not responded to
messages to comment left
by The Sun by phone and
email.
Willamina High School
Athletic Director Jerry
Buczynski said he'd like to
hire a new coach by the end
of April. The job is currently
posted and Buczynski said
he's already received more
inquiries than expected. He
will accept applications un-
til early April.

"If the brace doesn't work,
she will be facing surgery,"

how to best help the 32-year-
old intern, who does not have
medical insurance.
As of that meeting, Tanaka
had stood and walked wearing
the brace.

The Spartan baseball team
left 12 guys on base in a sea-
son opening loss, 9-2, at To-
ledo on Monday.
"1 saw some real encour-
aging things from several
guys, but it showed in today's
game that a couple mistakes
here and there and it com-
pletely changes the complex-
ity of the game," said head
coach Todd Peterson.
Ben Brown scored in the
first inning when Alex
Ludwig drew a bases loaded
walk, but the Spartans
couldn't add to it.
In the third, Sheridan had
two on in scoring position with
two outs. In the fourth, the
Sparts had bases loaded, but
couldn't produce a run.
With bases loaded again,
Henry van Euen drew a walk
in the fifth to score Tristan
Thompson.
"We have to become more
disciplined at the plate and be
able to produce some runs
when we get those chances,"
Peterson said.
The game was called in the
fifth inning due to rain.
