Bishop
makes appearance
Continued from PAGE 1
adds a colorful backdrop to the worship floor. New
carpeting was laid underneath the rows ofpews lead-'
ing all the way up to the pulpit area. Blonde hard-
wood floors fill out the main dining area and kitchen
space to give the building a modem look.
Overall, the base square footage increased by
about 800 feet, up from the original 7,000-square-
foot floor plan, on the main floor. The upper floor
lost some area footage due to the elevator that was
installed to meet new building codes. Total cost of
the renovation was estimated to be at $1.5 million.
Aside from the stained glass windows, the old-
est church bell in Yamhill County was Salvaged and
re-installed above the main entry door with its
charred bottom to remind all of its indestructibility.
A portion of the Sunday worship festivities was
led by Pastor Marcus to thank the hard working con-
struction crews for their skilled creation.
Contracting foreman Dick Schumann was instru-
mental in the timeliness of preparing the building
for the grand re-opening date. Though the building
was approximately a week away from receiving a
full permit, all that remained was laying the asphalt
for the parking lot that will encompass the church's
back lot. A temporary permit was issued so that the
dedication could take place on time.
"I was proud to be part of the re-construction
project and want to thank the city for their help along
the way" said Schumann.
Worshipers were given an opportunity to express
their gratitude during the services. Individually each
stood up to share their tears and smiles of thankful-
ness in a moving segment of the ceremony.
One unidentified follower gave a rousing testi-
mony. "For two years I have told people that we
have a church but we are short a building. Now we
have our building back and we thank God for bring-
ing us home again" she said.
Resident Bishop Robert Hoshibata made a spe-
cial appearance from his Portland-based headquar-
ters. He took the pulpit towards the end of the ser-
vices on Sunday and delivered an inspirational ser-
mon that has become the mantra of the Sheridan
United Methodist Church during the 748 days since
the fire.
Bishop Hoshibata metaphorically called the new
church "the Phoenix Church" because of its new
life while being raised from the ashes of the 2008
fire that once brought it to the ground. ,
"Now we may leave behind the sadness and the
loss. This church is not a reminder of the past to be
adorned but it will be used to build new hope and
bring a larger spirit than it had before" said Bishop
Hoshibata.

his hands in worship in the center aisle
during Sunday's re-dedication ceremony.
Visitors arrive at the newly finished
Sheridan United Methodist Church on
North Bridge Street.
A greeter welcomes the community back
to the church. It was destroyed by a fire
two years ago.

Western District, reflects on the scripture

Methodist Church.
