8 The Sun, Wednesday, At.the,Movies T: i By lan Black Special to The Sun I'm the first to admit I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to the subject of ballet. I know it involves artfully choreo- graphed dancing by incredibly fit people who nearly destroy their legs and feet, particularly the women. I know the names of a few famous ballets and if you played me a very famous seg- ment of music from one, I might be able to tell you what ballet it's from. No way I could tell you who wrote it, though, or anything else. It's simply one • in The Sun Chis week for Great Savings! As you may have surmised, DarrenAronofsky's latest fill, "Black Swan," is about ballet...and insanity, but we'll get to that later. And because the movie is called "Black Swan" you probably won't be sur- prised to know that the ballet at the heart of the fill is Swan Lake, which is one of those aforementioned ballets I had heard the title of at some point in the past. This movie probably taught me more about ballet and Swan Lake in particular than anything else ever had. The COmmodores formed in 1967 when all six original members were attending Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Their original plan was simply to play music as a pastime and to meet girls. Doom started to open for them when they received an invi- tation to play a club in New York City. But the band didn't want to disappoint the club owner so they brought many of their family and friends from Alabama to fill the house. Un- aware of the planned crowd, the club owner wasn't too im- pressed with their talents but did like the fact that they brought people into his club~ They were signed to be the house band for the New York club. The band later auditioned to be the opening tour act for the Jackson 5 and it wasn't long after that they were signed to the Motown label. The Commodores have recorded seven number one hits including "Sail On," "Three Times A Lady" and "Nightshiff' for whichthey won their only Grammy award. Two of the original members will be playing the casino this Sunday. Trtmapet player Wdliam K:ing and drummer Walter "Clyde" Orange have maintained the band's presence for parts of five de- cades. Tenor J. D. Nicholas, who joined the band when original lead singer Lionel Richie left in 1982, will be there as well. The Temptations will bring their brand of finely tuned har- monies, shimmering suave outfits and precision choreogra- phy to the stage this Sunday. The band formed in 1960 by way of Detroit, Michigan and was one of the first groups to sign with Motown. The Tempta- tions were in fact the first Motown group to receive a Grammy award. They have garnered three Grammy's in total. The band had early success in the 1960s with songs like "My Girl," "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg." But egos, drug problems and untimely deaths forced the band to incur several line-up changes in order to rrmintain their world wide tour schedule through the years. The band still con- tinues to tour with its one original living member Otis Williams and Dennis Edwards who joined the band in 1968. All five original members plus Edwards were inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Tickets are still available for the Sunday night show.
