10 The Sun, 'Wednesday, January 5, 2011 By Herb Swett Correspondent, The Sun What looked like a rout for the Willamina boys on Dec. 28 at Scio turned out to be a win but a squeaker, 57-55. The Bulldogs' recent shoot- ing practice paid offfor the first three quarters, but in the fourth, Scio tied the score more than once. Willamina coach Josh Manley said the officiating worked against the Bulldogs, but he stopped short of saying that was the only reason his players lost their offensive mo- mentttm. Both teams played aggres- sively in the first quarter and controlled the ball well, but Willamma easily outshot the Loggers. The period ended with the Bulldogs ahead 12-5. In the second quarter, Wil- lamina exploded for 29 points, including three three-point shots by Brady Bruckner. His third tray came just as the buzzer sounded. Scio's shoot- ing also picked up, with the Loggers adding 17 points. At halftime, the score was 41-22. The teams differed greatly in the distributions of their points through the game. Scio's Darian Reger led all scorers with 27 points, with no team- mate getting more than nine. The Bulldogs had a three-way tie for point leadership; Bruckner, Kenna Cumberland and Nic Goodman scored 11 each. Willamina widened its lead to 48-22 in the third quarter before a layup by Hunter Reger gave Scio its first two points of the second half, with the period almost half over. Then the Bull- dogs had trouble finding the basket while the Loggers got hot. They outscored Willamina 12-10 in the third. The fourth was the quarter when the Bulldogs almost threw the game away. Scio dominated the scoring through+ out the period while Willamina took many shots but seldom found the basket. There was a rapid succession of steals late in the quarter, but it ended with Scio controlling the ball. It was in the fourth that Manley thought the men in striped shirts failed to call a technical foul on a Logger who the coach said did the same thing for which a BULLDOGS I Page 8 Photo by Clinton Vlnlng Taylor Grauer fights his way to the basket against a Western Mennonite defender earlier this season when the teams met in Sheridan. "We need to raise $7,100," said Nile Court coordinator Kathie Byers. "We plan to raise funds through cookie sales, can and bottle drive, garage sale, car wash, half-time competitions at the home basketball games and Bingo night (just to name a few)." Nearly 50 youth have signed up to go on the snow trips. Byers said they are raising funds so the cost will only be $25 per person, per trip. ''We want the trip to be af- fordable to anyone," Byers said. The first major fundraising event will be this Saturday, Jan. 8. The group is collecting cans and bottles (including water bottles) in the Sheridan and McMinnville areas and also washing cars. Tentative trips to Mt. Hood Ski Bowl are planned for Feb. 19, March 5, March 11 (no- school day), March 19 and April 2. For more information, call Nite Court coordinator Kathie Byers at 503-560-1090.
