6 The Sun, Wednesday, January 5, 2011 At the Movies By lan Black Special to The Sun What is it about boxing that we fmd so endearing? Scratch that, what is it about boxing movies that we find so endear- ing? I've never been all that en- thralled with actual boxing matches. They tend to be a lot less inspirational and seem a lot longer. Despite the fact that just about every sports movie ever made is inspirational, boxing seems to have taken up special residence, be it "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." There are some exceptions; of course, "Million Dollar Baby" is very bittersweet, as is "Raging Bull." For the most part, though, boxing stories are appealing be- cause they are almost always about underdogs; about one person overcoming their fears and doubts, training hard and making a name for themselves. 'q'he Fighter" is no exception to the boxing movie rnle, even though it's a biopic, proving that real life can be just as predictable as a movie. Its backdrop may be a little grittier, set against poverty- ridden Massachusetts, which has been a favorite of movies of late (from "The Departed" to "The Town"). However, the payoff is the same. (503) 623-2365 AFTER BILL (503) 623-8677 HOURS JOHN (503) 585-1385 li Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is a down and out amateur boxer living in the shadow of his bother's, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), fading glory. Dicky's claim to fame was that he once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard. Mickey's mother, Alice Ward (Melissa Leo), arranges his fights, though she seems to only care about the money it brings the family and not how much Mickey is beat up. She dotes con- stantly on Dicky, despite his only role being to train Mickey and ignores his obvious drug prob- lem, while mostly seeing her younger son as a cash cow. After a particularly embar- rassing fight, Mickey's girl- fiiend, Charlene (AmyAdams), convinces Mickey that his fam- ily may not exactly be the best thing for his boxing career. So Mickey strikes out on his own, and his family, particularly Dicky, are forced to ask them- selves if they ever had Mickey's best interest at heart, after all. "The Fighter" is a very well acted film. That is probably its strongest suit. Not to say that the rest of the film is in any way emotional disconnect with this underwhelming, it's simplythat family being so dysfunctional this film is definitely about that it's hard to find the connec- character first, ties.
