Aside from having a ton of fun, stu- dents got to vote for Oregon's student council. At the conference WHS' leadership class got to know other students from all over Oregon and participate in dances, breakout sessions, and listen to guest speakers. All in all it was a great trip and students are excited to get started on their leadership project and improve the school! Canned Food Drive By Brittany McC01m Wfllamina High School competed against Wdlamina Middle School in a canned food drive. The middle school won with 1,508 pounds of food collected. The high school had only 535.3 pounds of food collected. The high school also had two inner-school competitions, advisory vs. advisory and class vs. class. Mrs. Peters' class won the advisory competition, collecting 100 pounds. Mr. Hughes' class came in second with 82.3 pounds. The juniors won the class competi- tion with 281 pounds of food collected. The freshmen came in second with 162.2 pounds. The cans were taken to the VFW Hall and they donated part of them to the Grand Shera- mina food bank so that families who needed food over Christmas time would have it. Thank you to all students and staff who brought canned food in. Holiday By Sarah Grant Willamina High School's National Honor Society added holiday blessings to the Backpack Food program. Budget Cuts an issue at WHS By Becca Glass Money is indeed an issue for WHS right now as funds are very slim. Re- cently a boiler has broken which will cost the school at least $30,000 to fix leaving classrooms very cold. This is only the icing on the cake for WHS since the school has al- ready been struggling to make do with what little revenue it has. Altogether Oregon's schools have lost $1.15 billion, so it's photo by Rebecca Glass no surprise that Willamina's school board has been trying to fred some majorly effective budget cuts. So far, they have only come up with closing the Willamina Middle School at Grand Ronde and moving it to the elementary/ high school in modu- lar buildings. Another proposal is to go to four day weeks. These two cuts will save the school $999,000 though it's still not enough. These are just some ideas and there will be some more fmal pro- posals at the next school board meeting on the December 15. So the next time there's a bond that benefits the school, take consideration of our community and the children that are in it and vote for it to pass!
