OUR PIIST GOING TO ASSOCIATION In pioneer days, when the mtertainment we know were not possible, many the most Joyous get-tog,,h- were related to the actlvi- of school and church. This would been true in the case of any denomination, Although most frontier re= groups were pretty free easy as far as organiza- was concerned, this was true of the Baptists. most important meeting of year for these folk was the "Association," which was a of representatives tro m eight or ten Baptist in one region. The meetings took place western Oregon and Wash- in the 1650's and '60's late June, when, as one old- describes it, "Seed time over, harvest notyet come, roads at their best, and cared they for a hundred of travel, or a week or [tWo of time?" Everybody went, |Whole f a mil I e s, entire Some of the churches tiny centers of faith--slx eight members--and here a chance to meet with a treat crowd. They traveled on by wagon, some- on foot. The snoring was but, more than that preachers argued all night certain minute points of while the others tried the Rev. A. J. Hunsaker, rem- embered that on one occasion his mother cooked for 93 Of course, she had help from all the other women present. For the children there were simple games, tag, hide=and- seek, and, more fun than any- thing else: a maze The men would dig up turf and line it on both sides of an intricate and complex pattern of path- ways. The children could wan- der in the maze, and yet they were never out of sight, for they could be seen at every turn by the adults. After a few days to a week, everyone went home, and the business of the assoclatlon was done, and the results were printed in a small pamphlet and distributed to the churches. These programs are invalu- able for the study of early church history. Recently the Oregon Historical society has microfilmed in sequence, as- sociation by association, all of the Pacific Northwest ones known to exist, from depositor- ies from coast to coast. These matter-of-fact printed records, however, oniy capture a frag- ment of the gaiety, the fellow- ship, and the serious moments, too, of the pioneer association meetings. Willamina Man Finishes Course SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -James E. Kulbel, son of Mrs. Margret Solum of Wtllamina, completed basic training Nov. 15, at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. The nine-week training in- cluded naval orientation, his- tory and organization, seaman- ship, ordnance and gunnery, military drill, first aid and sur- viva/. During the training recruits receive tests and interviews which determine their future assignments in the Navy. Upon completing the program they are assigned to service schools for technical training or to ships and stations for on-the-job training in a Navy rating spec- lalty. Naval training produces the power in seapower by supply- in| qualified personnel to man the ships, planes and shore stations of today's Navy. THE SUN is an ideal gift any I total of 61.
