D A S <! s Hot Jose will be there, and so will at least seven other chili chefs and f their teams when the second annual Chili Madness Fiesta Daze gets underway Saturday in downtown Willamina. A Mexican fiesta band, counlry- western signer Geronia Coyle, a make-believe appearance by "Car- men," chili sales, an afternoon Gong Show and a downtown sale by participating merchants round out Fiesta Daze features. Sponsored by the Willamina Business Group, the Fiesta Daze centers around a hotly contested chili cook-off at which costumed chili chefs and their supporting crews vie to produce the best chili in the West Valley and have fun doing it, according to Gerry Elstun, "Hot Jose" to chili lovers, resident export and winner of last year's contest. The event gets underway with a chef's meeting at 9 a.m. Serious chili cooking begins shortly there- after in specially decorated chili- cooking booths on the Red Apple Comer Market parking lot. The public is invited to watch the arcane and mysterious process as jealously guarded chili recipes are concocted. Samplers and tickets for voting will be available from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and chili judging will be at 2 p.m. Awards and prizes, including a $50 grand prize, will be handed out. Chili will be sold to the public for $1 a bowl after the judging. Entertainment other than the chefs themselves will include the Mexican fiesta band "Pedro y Su Nortendos," performing from 10 a.m. to noon. Popular country-western singer Geronia Coyle will take over from noon to 2 p.m. and a "Gong Show"talent show will begin at 2:30 p.m. An appearance by the Latin heart- breaker Carmen Miranda, a heart- throb of list year's chili cookoff in Portland, is anticipated some time in the afternoon, "but not in real life," organizers say. A sale by downtown merchants will continue through the day. Chili chefs and their crews are encouraged to wear costumes and to decorate their booths, according to Elstun. Last year's winning team traveled to Portland and the North- west Chili Cookoff. Not just any chili recipe will do in the cookoff, Elstun said. As defined by cookoff rules, true chili is any kind of beef cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and other ingredients, with the nota- ble exception of beans or spaghetti, which are strictly forbidden. No ingredient may be pre-cooked, with the exception of bottled sauces, canned tomatoes, peppers and bev- erages. For complete rules and an entry form, teams should contact Elstun at 876-4525 or Greg Home, Willamina Business Group president, at 876- 6473.
