Wednesday, August 8, 2012, The Sun 7 CERT class in Mac this fall History has shown that when a disaster strikes emer- gency responders will be over- whelmed. Especially if it is a regional disaster. The mutual aid resources will be attending to their own areas and unable to help out in our city. It is im- perative that residents are pre- pared to take care of themselves and their neighbors. The City of McMinnville will hold a Community Emer- gency Response Team (CERT) training beginning Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. The class runs on Tuesday evenings through Nov. 13 and on Saturday, Nov. 17. Classes include Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Disaster Medical, Light Search and Rescue, Di- saster Psychology, Terrorism and CERT, and a practical ex- ercise. All classes must be at- tended in order to complete the training and to be able to re- spond as a team member. The purpose of CERT is to provide training to take care of the individual's family and as- sist their neighborhood when an emergency or disaster oc- curs. Once a person has ob- tained the training, and there are enough people trained in a neighborhood, a team is put together to respond within the neighborhood. After the neigh- borhood has been taken care of the team responds to a staging area to be deployed to another area or to help emergency re- sponders with other aspects of the disaster response. The CERT class is free. An application is required prior to the first class. Applications can be obtained by going to the City of McMinnville Emer- gency Management page at www.macpd.org or at the po- lice or fire station. Completed applications should be dropped off at the police department or emailed to Doug Cummins, cummind@ci.mcminnville.or.us. Class size is limited to 25 people. Any question can be di- rected to Doug Cummins at 503-437-2341. mmm New Dawn takes stage at WVCC Longlime local band The New Dawn will have a benefit dance and record release show Aug. 18 with proceeds going to the West Valley Community Campus. The family oriented event will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the West Val- ley Community Campus (old Wfllamina High School) audi- torium on Southeast Washington Street. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and music begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $15 per couple, $5 for youth 13-18, and $2 for kids 7-12. Kids 6 and under are free. Basic techniques will be taught for creating and grout- ing an indoor wall piece using ceramic, glass tiles and mirror. The cost is $100 plus a $15 material fee.
