In the Bible God's Grace is unmerited favor By Rev. Connie Crawford Lain Special to The Sun I had a nickname growing up. I would love to tell you that it was something like Princess or Sweet Pea but the reality was that my nickname was Grace. And it was not because I was beauty in motion and graceful, it was because I was not either of those things. I fell out of trees; I fell down the stairs and even up the stairs. I broke things ... I seemed to be an acci- dent waiting to happen. I would also love to tell you that I have grown out of it, but the truth is that I still fall off logs, down hillsides, the stairs at the church and of course there was my mad dash away from the killer mouse that brought down my bathroom shelving. It still seems that in my exuberant enjoyment of life, I of_ ten seem to end up on the ground looking at the sky and thinking, "How did that happen?" Recently I have been pondering that word ... grace. Unmerited favor... God's gracious gift to us right where we are. The grace that pervades our lives and wraps us in the re- ality of God's love changes everything. The truth is that grace shapes us into something better and stronger than we could ever be on our own. As I have thought about God's grace, I have wondered if I am very good at shar- ing His grace with other people? I am not sure that grace is always my first response to those who have hurt me or those who are difficult to love. And yet, it is the call of Christ on our lives to live in the expres- sion of the reality of God's grace. It changes everything.., my speech, my attitudes ... even my relationships. I want to live in the fullness of God's grace and I want that grace to flow through me as a natural expression of His grace at work in me. I have a feeling that God's Grace can even make me graceful... R Connie Crawford Lain is the pastor at IHllamina Free Methodt Church. She can be reached at pastorconnie@live.com. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, The Sun 7 Off the Shelf A twisted, emotional mystery By Courtney Terry Special to The Sun Summer is finally here and you'd probably like nothing bet- ter than to kick back in the ham- mock and flip through some pages. An exciting Heartsick, by Chelsea Cain, might provide the escape you're looking for. Heartsick features Archie Sheridan, a middle aged Portland Police Detective. For 10 years, he was the lead detective on the taskforce to capture the elusive Beauty Killer, a female serial killer named Gretchen Lowell. Deceived by Gretchen, Archie himself is captured and tortured for l 0 days before miraculously being freed. He does not come away un- scathed. Two years later, when Heartsick begins, Archie is ad- dicted to painkillers, his marital life is in shambles, and he is still deeply obsessed with Gretchen Lowell. Under the guise of learn- ing whereabouts of the remains of Gretchen's countless victims, Archie visits her every week in prison, where Gretchen continues to torture and manipulate Archie emotionally. Their relationship becomes more complicated as someone begins murdering young girls, and Archie fmds himself leading another serial killer taskforce. This time, he is being shadowed by an equally emotionally dam- aged young reporter, Susan Ward. Susan initially is drawn to the story of the "hero cop" but quickly begins to unravel the se- cret of Archie's pill addiction and his twisted relationship with Gretchen. Archie works franti- cally to solve the murders, but also extract himself from the tangled web of Gretchen, Susan, and the new killer. This thriller was a dark, fast- paced mystery. Right from the beginning Cain gives her char- acters so much realistic emotion, the reader finds themselves hop- ing for Archie's redemption as much as he denies his need for it. Cain's writing style is addic- tive, almost like a torture in itself - her gripping plot points have you wanting to skip forward to find what happens, yet you feel the need to slow down and savor every word. Cain is a local au- thor, and the backdrop of Port- land provides a haunting yet fa- miliar landscape for the story. Heartsick is everything a good murder mystery should be. Even more thrilling, it is the first of an ongoing series. Check your lo- cal library for titles.
