6 The Sun, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 At the Movies 'Ted' is stuffed full of grown-up laughs By lan Black Special to The Sun I was in something of a di- lemma this past weekend, with no desire to see the only new film released this week--yet another iteration to the tired "Ice Age" series--but this also left me with very little new prospects. I'm sure the most recent "Ice Age" film will amuse young children who liked the ones before, but for the rest of us, it doesn't hold much appeal. So I decided, instead, to check out one of this summer's strange oddities. I mentioned back when I reviewed "Magic Mike" that there was another movie released that week, a comedy by the name of "Ted," which broke a summer record for an R-rated film. As a matter of fact, it made another $20 million this week- end, even in its third week. Suf- fice to say, it's become a very odd surprise smash, and I went to find out why. Our story begins, charm- ingly and hilariously nanated by Patrick Stewart, with young John Bennett, a lonely child who just wants a friend. He re- ceives a stuffed bear for Christ- mas, and when he makes a wish for the bear to truly be alive and to be his fi-iend, a coincidental falling star grants it. The next morning Teddy is a fully sapient living creature, while still being stuffed. After his parents get over the shock, Teddy enjoys a brief life in the spotlight of fame. Fast forward to adulthood, John (Mark Wah/berg) and Ted (Seth MacFarlane) are still best friends who live together, though the world has mostly forgotten about Ted. John is currently dating Lori (Mila Kunis), but when she proposes to move their relationship to the next level, John's friendship with Ted complicates matters. As you might have guessed from the synopsis, this is actu- ally a pretty standard modem bromance story. Regular, relat- able guy has crazy friend and a girlfriend, crazy friend and girl- friend don't get along, and trouble ensues. Obviously the kicker here is that the friend is an anthropomorphic teddy bear, which admittedly is a big and strange enough twist on the premise that the film wraps around to becoming interesting again. Pretty much every aspect of this film, writing, directing and starring as the title role was handled by Seth MacFarlane, most well known as the creator and star of Fox's "Family Guy." Though some have claimed that MacFarlane has lost his touch with his various shows of late, he seems rather on the money with this film. The hu- mor is consistently funny, the cast well chosen and the film ultimately quite entertaining. This film certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel comedically or in terms of genre, nor is it a huge culture phenomenon like "The Hangover" was, but it is nonetheless a very successful raunchy comedy, hitting all the right entertaining notes you would expect or want a film like this to hit. "Ted" is not, in any way, a complex film. Pretty much ev- erything you need to know is in the premise. It certainly isn't un- predictable either, since the plot mirrors so many modem com- edies of the same genre. Still, the rather unique way in which it is handled enabled the experience to still seem fresh, despite the somewhat standard plot. Obviously, "Ted" isn't for everyone, and it's already a three-week-old film, so if you miss it in theaters, this is deft- nitely one to rent. Summer typically has plenty of action films, but it can sometimes be a slow time for comedies. Luckily, "Ted" man- ages to deliver in that respect, and ultimately being funny is really the most important thing a comedy can offer.
