AuCoin made the an- nouncement in a speech to the North West Timber Associa- tion conference at Salishan. AuCoin said he made the formal request to the presti- gious science academy be- cause the EPA study which brought about the ban has payroll" losses and $910 million in total forest net worth. "Even though the economic price is high," AuCoin said, "no responsible person would tolerate 2-4-5-T spraying if in fact it causes miscarriages and is a hazard to public health." AuCoin has supported the EPA study because so far it has been the best information available, he said. "Until it can be proven wrong," he said, "there is no other responsible stand. We need to know for once and for all what been criticized by both in-the facts are. That's why l'ue 2-4-5-T asked .the Academy to step 'Was in'.' ..... ....... : :' ........ • against EPA or its study," AuCoin said. "If it can stand up under scrutiny, the ban should stand. If it can't the ban should be lifted." The EPA banned the post- icicle, a derivitiv¢ of the chemical dioxin used to control forest undergrowth, after fig- ures it gathered showed higher incidences of mis- carriages among women living in the Alsea, Ore. area where the herbicide had been sprayed. "You may not like the conclusions of this new stu- dy," AuCoin warned the timbermen, "They might very well support the conclusions of the EPA study. If so, you will have to live with those conclusions because no forest management practice is worth the miscarriage of a human fetus. "On the other hand," he said, "opponents of 2-4-5-T may not like the conclusions of the study, but they will have to live with them too because no one has the right to make major economic decisions for others on the basis of hunch." Oregon Gay. Victor Atiyeh has estimated the ban on 2-4-5-T will cost Oregon 20,000 jobs, $200 million in annual The National Academy of Science, a government agency with independent status, was formally requested to make the study, AuCoin said, because it is the best agency available. "This study will be con- ducted by independent schob ars," he said. "It will be thorough. It will go beyond the EPA's correlation of numbers of miscarriages; it will in- vestigate the actual causes of the miscarriages in the Alsea area. It will also probe the broader question of how dioxins, from which 2-4-5-T is derived, affect public health. "I'm a layman," AuCoin said, "just like most members of Congress. I have no way to take sides. I For Your Next Car or Truck GLENN VORRES Sale Representative Cars--Trucks FORD--MERCURY-- LINCOLN 1925 Hiway 99 N. McMinnville, Ore.
