The pair finished second in canoe category. ills and thrills in river race many ways to get through the falls behind Conifer Plywood in last Saturday's race. These three decided to Just jump right ........... ! i! iiiilYii iiill over the falls instead of staying in their raft and spilling. The 21st annual even drew 58 competitors. It was a photo-finish ending but the judges ruled that Mike Waddell of Dallas, in a kayak, beat out canoists Jim and Jon Togstad of Sheridan and Willamina to cross under the Sheridan bridge first and win the 21st annual South Yamhill River Race on Satur- day. With a low river the times weren't some of the fastest ever clocked in the race. But Waddell won the event in 1:26, just ahead of the Togstads with 1:27. A total of 58 persons entered the fun run, according to Corinne Ivey, a member of the Sheridan Jaycees which organized the event for the first year under the sponsorship of the West Valley Chamber of Commerce. Hundreds of spectators watched from shore and jammed both the Steel Bridge in Willamina and the Sheridan bridge. Another popular viewing spot was behind Conifer Plywood where most river runners spilled while trying to cross over the falls. Here's a list of the winners by cate- gory: Canoe: Jim and Jon Togstad, 1st, 1: 27; Bart Bryant and Mike Wagler, Willamina, 2nd, 1:30; Norman McLachlan and Phillip Williamson, Amity, 3rd, 1:52. Kayak: Mike Waddell, Dallas, 1st, 1:26; Peter Higbee, Sheridan, 2nd, 1:32. Rubber canoe/kayak: Ray Carpen- ter, Willamina, 1st, 1:35; Tom and Drew Pembroke, Silverton, 2nd, 1:$5. Raft.
