6 The Sun, Wednesday, April 4, 2012 At the Movies 'Wrat h of the Titans' manages only Olympian mediocrity By lan Black Special to The Sun I see a lot of movies in my line of work, which makes sense given that this is my line of work. I have seen more than 400 films just for my job alone. Add the films I watched before I started working and the many others I watch just for fun and that number gets pretty big. Now, plenty out there have made an impression. Some were truly fantastic in at least one, but often many respects. Others were memorably awful. The vast ma- jority, however, are not memo- rable at all. If faced with the film again I would likely remember that I had seen it, probably what I thought of it and more than likely what it was about, but be- yond that there simply wouldn't be much to remember. Those films swimming in the sea of mediocrity are usually not the type to get sequels, unless they happened to be somehow successful, which is usually something I would note. The 2010 "Clash of the Titans" re- make was one such film I never expected to have a sequel. In fact, I so didn't expect it that I didn't realize there actually had been one made until it came out. The2010 film certainlydidn't leave much of an impressiorL It lacked the cheesy charm of the original, and the only thing it did that I actually remember liking was making fun of the stupid owl from the original, which this se- ries thankfully dropped. Apart from that, though, it seemed quite wrapped up to me.And yet, some- how, some producer managed to create a plot for a second film. For those who don't remem- ber the plot of the first film, that's not surprising. Perseus (Sam Worthington), the demi- god son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), managed to kill the Kraken, then Zeus brought back his dead girlfriend Io, and we ended on a fairly positive note. Well, flash-forward a few years. Perseus is living the quiet life and Io has died off-screen. But now he has a son, and thus can pull offthe widower-father role while still leaving room open for a romance subplot. Due to the diminished power' of the gods from a lack of be- fief, the walls of Tartarus (where Greek mythology keeps all it's evil beasties) are weakening, threatening to release the Titans, which were the gods before the Olympian gods; their parents so to speak. Anyway, they' re bad. But thanks to some skulldug- gery from Ares and Hades, the gods are quickly put out of com- mission and Perseus is reluc- tantly drawn back into the fight. Oh, and they brought back Andromeda too, but she's played by a different aclress now and is the love interest because; I don't really know. Because that was supposed to happen in the last movie, I guess and they just sort of went a different way with it for some reason. So, for those of you out there with some knowledge of Greek mythology, you should be shak- ing your heads right about now. "Clash of the Titans" at least, was a truncated but partially ac- curate retelling of the Perseus myth, with various additiom and embellishments. Suffice to say, there weren't very many sequels to Greek myths, so we basically just end with this weird patch- work story made up of a bunch of different GTeek myths that just seems kind of weird. As for the film itself? WeU, it's bland. It's pretty much just a bunch of uninterested looking actors battling various computer- generated crealx,es. The dialogue is stilted; the story uninteresting, and the 3D effects are once again just sort of there. There really isn't much more to say. "Wrath of the Titans" de- buted at second place, behind "The Hunger Games" which made another $60 million this week. This film made about half of that. In truth, it isn't re- ally worth seeing, especially for the inflated 3D price. If you're mdy in the mood for some Greek mythology, you should probably try out the Percy Jackson book series; just the books, though. The movie is once again an Olympian mess.
