Sheridan won 59-33. Victory belongs to Spartans, despite Bulldog bursts By Clinton Vining Publisher, The Sun A four-point first half was too much for Willamina to overcome on Sheridan's floor last week as the Spartan varsity boys' basketball team marched to a 59-33 victory. Wdamim's scoring came in bursts, mainly one in the quarter. After going more than 12 minutes without scoring from 1:20 left in the first quarter tmtil the 4:40 mark in the third, Wdlamim went on a 19-6runin the next three and a half minutes. Despite having only scored four points in the first halt WHS coach Jereme Park looked at the te s! :; atleast they were : The Spartans added to the ad- vantage, going up by 35 before Wfllamina's outside shooters bo- ganhitting from outside. Braden Ebensteiner struck first from three-point land. Then Tyson Jahn connected three times and Casey Davis hit, too. Jalm and Brodey Bruckner each hit from downtown again in the fourth, but the Spartan lead was too great. Joey Hertel led all scorers for the Spartans with 15. V'tmay Goonan, who tied with Jacob Hertel with 10 points, had Sheridan's only Uey. "I thought we started out great. Jumping on them like that took the life out of them," said SHS coach James Denton. "That's what I wanted to do. High energy, create some turnovers. Not even let them think about what they needed to do next." Captain Joey Hertel said he told the guys they could take the rest of the season off now that they beat Wdlamina. Joking, of course. "It's always good to beat a rival," he said. 'Tour points in a half is not very impressive," Park said. "I felt like we had a lid on the hoop." Two-point first too much for SHS againsl Lady Bulldogs By Clinton Vining Publisher, The Sun Take away the first quar- ter and the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Spartans played a two- point game. Unfortunately for the home team, Sheridan only scored two points in the first, giving up 10 to their West Valley ri- vals and lost 36-26 last Wednesday. Kyra Toney led all scorers for Willamina with seven points. Despite the single dig- its, seven Lady Bulldogs put points on the scoreboard. Sheridan sisters Kayla and Jessica Roberts along with Jill Nichols fled for a team high six points. Nichols also led the Lady Spartans with nine rebounds. "Jill was great," said SHS coach Gary Mahe. "She's still learning this game, but she's like a spunge, she wants to learn more and more and more." The Lady Bull- dogs used ateam ef- fort, with three girls scoring, to take a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. WHS looked to take a 12-point lead into the break, but a Jessica Roberts trey narrowed the gap. Willamina led 20-11 at haft. A pair of Nichols buckets cut Wdlamina's lead to five to start the third, but then WHS went on a 9-2 run: A pair of Sheridan scores started the fourth, too, but again the Lady Bulldogs forged forward, holding onto their lead. "I don't think we were mentally ready to play," said Wil- lamina coach Tom Anderson. That said after Willamina defeated Dayton's girls 61-26 two nights earlier. Coach Mahe was thankful that his girls that struggled shooting didn't get blown, out, also commenting on Willamina's blowout win over Dayton. "We stayed in the game, but we stlot hom-bly," Mahe gaiii' am= Wave Broadband I CABLE :: INTERNET :: PHONE 00lemmm Try Wave (able, internet & phone on sale now for $ 95 EACH per month ........... :: :: ....
